The Sedlec Ossuary is a small Roman catholic chapel, located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints (Czech: Hřbitovní kostel Všech Svatých) in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic. The ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, many of whom have had their bones artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel.
Taken from the catacombs of Rome in the 17 th century, the relics of twelve martyred saints where then attired in the regalia of the period before being interred in a remote church on the German/Czech border. Credits: Toby de Silva

Through these masks they could see without being recognized, and their habit of dressing as women added to their grotesque appearance.
I have an article on this saved somewhere….
There it is!
I always thought it was a part of Wren Day/St.Stepehens day celebrations though, at least it was before terrorism took over the tradition…
